"I Can't Breathe" is a body of work that spans 7 years, by creative partners Louis Carr and Sterling Scott, containing imagery from rallies behind Trayvon Martin to the current protests in the name of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Elijah McClain and so many others. As both Black creatives, we created this piece to talk about the movement, celebrate Black culture and hopefully to empower people to understand why, Black Lives Matter.
The book takes on two perspectives through both of our lenses, and also through our generations. It is a tribute to Black people, and highlighting all the we have come through and all that we still face. It was important to the both of us to produce such a work at this time, because due to Covid, people all over the world had to sit at home and watch the injustice that occurs against Black lives. As people took a stand, the movement really parallels the Civil Rights Movement and we both wanted to make sure that we preserve this moment in history while also telling a story, that it is not simply about the struggle but the beauty of Black lives as well.
